Care Associate Job Summary:

A Care Associate is a primary provider of Resident care. A Care Associate promotes the physical, personal, and emotional well-being of each Resident and strives to maintain the Residents at their maximum level of self-care and independence. The ultimate goal of quality Resident care is to enable each Resident, where possible, to maintain the highest level of functioning, attain a new stage of independence, or at least prevent regression. An active approach to Resident care will be taken and not just passive maintenance.

Essential Functions:

The following essential functions are normal for this position. This list is not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

General Duties:

• Support the mission, vision, and goals of the organization, upholding and promoting company culture and vision.

• Follow the individualized plan of care (ISP) for each assigned Resident. Observe Residents for changes in condition and report any changes immediately to the nursing supervisor. Document daily care and red flags throughout the shift especially rounds at night as they occur.

• Provide for or assist Residents with activities of daily living as needed, including bathing/showing according to schedule, oral care, toileting, dressing, etc. Assist in providing appropriate information and behavioral prompts, cues, redirection, and affirming support to Residents in need.

• Encourage Residents to participate in scheduled activities; assist Residents in getting to activities. Coordinate and assist with activities as directed.

• Assist Residents with transfers and ambulation as directed, using proper body mechanics, back supports, etc. Provide transportation for Residents within the community and, at times, accompany them to appointments outside the community.

• Respond to urgent calls as assigned and in a timely manner.

• Provide backup support to other departments, as needed. Work as a team with nurses in support of Resident care. Assists in problem-solving in stand-up communication or meetings with the nurse and or Health Service Director.

• Empty trash in Resident’s rooms and other Resident areas as needed. Keep Resident’s rooms, dining area, utility room, and other areas of the community clean and orderly. Keep the environment safe for Residents, i.e., hallways clear of equipment and floors free of debris and linen. Perform other housekeeping duties as assigned.

• Change bed linens according to community policy. Provide laundry services as necessary.

• Maintain restraint restraint-free environment at all times. Support fall prevention programs for all Residents in need. This includes a proactive approach through the use of intervention and monitoring. Practice & promote safety while in the rooms and rounds.

• Help welcome and transfer Residents according to community procedure.

• Assist in post-mortem care as instructed.

• Obtain and demonstrate knowledge of the Spark Book, Spark Lifestyle and Wellness philosophy, and its inherent core values. Support and participate in Spark Book Culture Initiatives (e.g., assist with feedback groups, assist in new initiatives, encourage Residents, and act as champions of fun).

Safety and Sanitation:

• Understand and follow safety and infection control policies and procedures.

• Follow established procedures in the use and disposal of personal protective equipment.

• Wear and/or use safety equipment and supplies (e.g., gait belt, back brace, mechanical lifts, etc.) when lifting or moving residents, as applicable to your position.

• Keep floors dry. Report spills immediately.

• Report all hazardous conditions and equipment problems to the supervisor immediately.

• Assist housekeeping in maintaining offices and common areas ensuring rooms are safe, comfortable, attractive, and orderly.

Training:

• Attends in-service and staff meetings and education programs.

• Continue to develop job-related knowledge, skills, and abilities by participating in continuing educational opportunities for personal growth and development.

Resident Rights:

• Promotes and protects residents’ rights, assists residents in making informed decisions, treats residents with dignity and respect, and supports residents’ independent expression, choice, and decision-making consistent with all pertinent laws regarding residents’ rights. Reports suspected abuse or neglect in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

Other:

• Perform other related duties as assigned

Desired Skills and Experience:

• Ability to read and write, follow written and oral instructions, and communicate effectively in English. Ability to work with the elderly in a courteous and friendly manner, demonstrating patience and compassion. Ability to perform duties with consideration for Residents’ rights at all times and demonstrate integrity and confidentiality in the care of Residents and in handling their health information.

• Knowledge of medical terminology, medical records management, medical supplies, and equipment. Ability to perform basic adult CPR and basic adult First Aid procedures.

Required Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED).

• CPR, First Aide

• At least 1 year of related work experience.

• CNA Certification may be required based on state requirements.

Qualifications:

The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the Associate is regularly required to on a daily basis, throughout the workday: Must be capable of sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, reaching, turning, bending, stooping, crouching, and kneeling, reaching over the head, grasping with both hands and fine manipulation. Must physically be able to lift up to 25 pounds unassisted. Must physically be able to carry, transfer, push and pull, and reposition Residents with assistance or using appropriate equipment. Must have normal eyesight or use corrective lenses. Must have three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distances and spatial relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. Must be able to recognize colors. Must be able to hear and distinguish between normal tones and be able to perceive the nature of sounds. Must be able to exchange ideas by means of the spoken word as well as engage in activities to convey detailed or spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, and/or quickly. Must have a normal sense of touch and smell.

Language Ability:

• Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills utilizing the English language.

• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence via print and email.

• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the public.

Mathematical Skills:

• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

• Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.

Cognitive Demands:

• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills:

• Ability to use Microsoft Office Programs.

• Ability to use the Internet and online-based databases.

Environmental Adaptability:

• Works primarily indoors in a climate-controlled setting.

• Must be able to tolerate exposure to dust, fumes, odors, water, etc., as well as noise, heights, and confined spaces. When outside, must be able to tolerate exposure to weather, fluctuations in temperature (hot, cold), and wet and/or humid conditions.

• Associates may be exposed to blood and/or body fluids with potential exposure to hazardous materials and infectious diseases.

• Possible exposure to unpleasant odors.

• Possible exposure to chemicals as identified in the MDS Manual.

• Continuous exposure to residents who are ill, confused, irritable, and irrational.
